science professor in virginia. thank you so much for your time. we have romney and obama in virginia right now. we have this segment called purple rain for a rain. it's solidly purple, and this is an interesting race for many reasons in virginia. what are you watching? >> the problem in virginia for the romney campaign is they're on the defensive on all the issues, on the economy, women's issues, national security, all of issues that are important they're on the defensive right now. they don't have an issue opening to press the obama campaign on in virginia. they're behind on the economy, which was supposed to be president obama's weakness. so i think they're really in trouble in virginia. we've seen a slip on the part of the romney campaign since the convention, so whatever that convention bounces, it turned into a convention slide in virginia. we have a series of polls out now that show the gap widening between obama and romney. i think the romney campaign needs to find an opening, a gap to shoot in virginia on that issue. they need to press that gap. >> it's interesting you say that the

, florida, ohio, and virginia. excuse me, three states. did so many, wisconsin, new hampshire. those are fundamentally favorable electrodynamics. i'm going to walk through the specifics in each of these. to designate president obama won florida by a grand total of 237,000. obama one ohio by a grand total of two ordered 50,000. pennsylvania was kind of a wipeout. carried by president obama by $620,000. wisconsin, smaller state and ohio, smallest it and florida, bigger vote margin. the census was carried by 410,000 votes for president obama. new hampshire win for obama by 68,000. a smaller number, but smaller state. fewer votes to pick up. i will let for obama by 136,000 votes and colorado went for one by 130,000. i told those up because the total up to about 2 million. for mitt romney to win the presidency he has to change about 0 million mines. he has to take 2 million of those voters in change and million of their minds. actually ferlies do. a very small number. do you realize that the campaign will spend approximately $2 billion on each side, more than $2,000 per vote will be spent

50, romney 43. in virginia and florida, obama 49, romney 44. they're beginning to get very depressed, the republicans, when they see these numbers. no republican has ever been elected without at least ohio. how worried should they be? >> if you ask any republican now if the election today was held, most republicans would say unfortunately it looks like president obama is leading. ohio and florida are in a close election, which is going to be must win for mitt romney. there are varying polls on virginia. virginia is looking strong for president obama but it's all over the map. president obama certainly has more paths to victory than mitt romney. he has to win florida and ohio and pick up nevada, colorado, iowa, new hampshire, wisconsin's in play. polls a snapshot of where we are now. you're right, it was before all of this tumult in the middle east began again. to the extent they represent a trend line tells us something. ohio is the only one of the three you mentioned that i think republicans are beginning to think is light blue and may be gone. >> maria, the advantage that the repub
